Our program provides personalized treatment plans for each of our clients to address their specific situation and needs. We believe all of our clients have the capacity to be resilient, to regain strength, health and success after a trying time, and we support them throughout. Our central goal is to provide effective and intensive treatment in an intimate treatment setting where we can foster connection, trust, and growth. Our validated treatment program focuses on helping teens learn about and deal with their disorders and the issues surrounding them in order to support long-term recovery.

Amy Brown, MA

NATIONAL DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS MENTAL HEALTH

After completing her Master’s degree in Psychology at Pepperdine University, Amy Brown began working to help individuals and families find healing and hope. Ms. Brown came to Discovery’s Resilience with extensive experience managing various eating disorder programs as well as behavioral health facilities. Under Ms. Brown’s leadership, Discovery’s Resilience’s substance abuse and mental health programs have flourished and Ms. Brown now oversees numerous mental health and substance abuse programs throughout southern California. Ms. Brown feels very deeply about the contribution she is making to improve the quality of life for adolescents and their families. One of the things that attracted Ms. Brown to Discovery’s Resilience was the shared commitment to providing the best quality of care to each patient and his or her family.

Ali Akhtar, LMFT

Ali Akhtar, LMFT

PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Ali Akhtar is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. He currently serves as the program director at Center for Discovery’s Mental Health Outpatient Programs in Los Alamitos, CA. Ali graduated from the University of California Irvine with a Bachelor’s in Cognitive Psychology and Biology. He obtained his Masters in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology.

Ali has a diverse background ranging from working with adults in outpatient individual therapy programs to youth and families in the residential treatment level of care. Ali worked as a counselor for Center for Discovery, Whittier, where he worked with adolescents and their families dealing with a range of mental health issues such as depression, anger, anxiety, loss of a loved one, parenting difficulties, developmental delays, PTSD, and substance abuse to name a few. He developed and maintained numerous groups during his tenure at Center for Discovery, Whittier. Ali’s work emphasizes helping the individual develop a sense of self and empowering them to overcome their obstacles. He specializes in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy as well as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Existentialism. He is eclectic with his work and very passionate when it comes to helping his clients succeed.

Nadine Haffer, LMFT

Nadine Haffer, LMFT

PRIMARY THERAPIST

Nadine earned her Master of Science degree in Counseling from California State University, Fullerton and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Interpersonal and Organizational Communication from California State University, Long Beach.

Nadine has worked with individuals and families suffering from addiction, HIV, and co-occurring mental health conditions in an intensive setting since 2012. She has extensive experience running psycho-education and process groups and is constantly amazed by the power of group dynamics and social support to help mobilize individuals to begin the recovery and healing process.

Nadine is passionate about working with children, adolescents, and teens in the mental health field. She is attentive to the myriad of biological and psychosocial stressors faced by children and teens who struggle with mood and anxiety disorders, acute and chronic stress disorders, low self-esteem, defiant behavior, phobias, and panic. She believes in creating a safe, non-judgmental, and warm therapeutic space for her clients and their families in order to help them find a greater sense of health, well-being, and hope. Nadine infuses mindfulness, attachment theory, and cognitive behavioral techniques in her treatment approach when working with adolescent mental health issues. She is excited and humbled to be part of the Center for Discovery’s treatment team – helping children, adolescents, and their families rebuild and heal their lives so that they can reach their full potential.

Rasheed Prescott

Rasheed Prescott

FACILITY COORDINATOR

Rasheed has been employed with Center for Discovery since 2011. His career started as a part-time counselor at our dual diagnosis facility. While there, he was able to develop a basic knowledge of the twelve step program as well as a strong yet positive milieu presence. After transitioning from part time to full time, he was eager to take on more responsibilities with the clients and their treatment. After a short stint as a full-time counselor, he transitioned to school liaison and eventually to facility administrator at our residential mental facility in Whittier (2013). In 2014 he became a certified Pro-Act and CPR instructor. Collectively, Rasheed has eight years of experience working with adolescents that have a various diagnosis. Rasheed takes pride in building a rapport with clients that allows him to be honest and direct as well as empathic and nurturing.

Tarah Nahhas

Tarah Nahhas

PROGRAM THERAPIST

Tarah earned her Master of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from  Loma Linda University and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of California, Riverside.

She has worked with adolescents, children, and their families experiencing an array of mental health issues including depression, suicidal ideation, gender identify, low self-esteem, trauma, and anxiety in an inpatient hospitalization setting. Tarah has experience conducting groups which include psychoeducation and skills building.

Her therapeutic techniques include a strength-based approach to treatment which also includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy to help my clients gain insight and better equip them to manage stressors, improve their wellbeing, and sense of self.  I am very passionate about working with children, adolescents and their families to help provide a non-judgmental and supportive environment. I am grateful to be a part of the Center for Discovery and look forward to assisting you.
