Therapies for Your Healing Journey
Talking through your feelings and experiences is one of the ideal ways to work through a mental health disorder. Therapy, whether delivered one-on-one or in a group, is one of the most useful tools for treating a mental health diagnosis.
Secure, private and effective, therapy has many benefits. Different types of therapy can help you understand your emotions or help you learn better coping strategies. Others allow you to share your hopes and struggles, helping you connect with others as you work toward the shared goal of managing a mental health disorder.
Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program uses a variety of therapies, helping our patients heal and thrive.
What Therapies are Used at Discovery Mood & Anxiety?
There are many kinds of therapy that can help you manage a mental health disorder. Everybody’s approach to treatment is a little different, so most people under our care participate in several forms of therapy.
Here’s a quick explanation of the forms of therapy we make use of.
NOTE: Therapies can vary per location.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy used to help treat many mental health disorders, eating disorders and substance use disorders. Cognitive behavioral therapy concentrates on patterns of abnormal thinking and distorted beliefs that are the underlying causes for irrational emotions and thought patterns that can lead to mental illness and addiction.
This key concept for this type of therapy approach is the idea that thoughts and feelings are directly related to behavior. Therefore, gaining control of one’s thoughts and emotions can better dictate behavior. Negative thoughts are often ingrained in us since early childhood and, over time, they become automatic, resulting in dysfunctional behaviors.
CBT is also an effective form of therapy for depression, mood disorders, personality disorders, psychotic disorders and anxiety. CBT has also been shown to help with anger issues, low self-esteem and physical health problems, such as pain or fatigue.
CBT is done in phases, where each phase must be completed successfully before you can move onto the next phase:
Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) provides you with new skills to manage painful emotions and decrease conflict in relationships. DBT encourages change but also promotes acceptance.
The term “dialectic” means that two opposite ideas can be correct at the same time. This is helpful for those diagnosed with a mental health disorder, as you may have adopted an “all or nothing view.”
DBT specifically focuses on providing therapeutic skills in four key areas:
Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy
Exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy is a form of CBT that breaks the powerful cycle of compulsions and fear. It helps people face their anxiety triggers without turning to unhelpful behaviors. Basically, ERP helps you retrain your brain.
An ERP session is a careful, step-by-step process that uses goal setting and structure. Like other forms of talk therapy, it’s completely confidential. During a session, you safely encounter images, thoughts and feelings that trigger your anxiety. As you do this, you gradually learn not to avoid your triggers or resort to ritual behaviors that make you feel safe.
Over time, this helps your brain handle anxiety and also builds your confidence and flexibility.
ERP teaches you that:
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a theoretical orientation that can help you learn how to accept the difficulties that come with life. This is a mindfulness-based therapy that helps patients:
ACT therapy includes teachings on the importance of mindfulness. Often taught in a group setting, these ACT meetings are intended to aid you in learning to be in the moment, present in your body, complete with your thoughts and emotions. Mindfulness and grounding are regarded as two of the most important parts of therapy, as it is imperative to treatment that you learn to be present with their whole self to fully benefit from therapy.
Group Therapy
Group therapy is a proven, effective way of helping people address the difficulties in their lives.
Speaking about your issues to strangers isn’t easy. However, group therapy is a secure and private space. Led by a healthcare professional, it allows you the chance to share your struggles with people who are experiencing the same mental health issues. Group therapy also helps you feel less alone, ensuring that you are not the only one to experience certain feelings.
Group therapy sessions are highly structured, confidential and safety is a priority. While many people feel nervous before their first session, most find group therapy to be a very positive experience.
