Family Resources for Mental Health

Seeing your loved one struggle with their mental health is never easy. In fact, it’s often devastating.

Poorly understood by most, mental health disorders can be isolating. You know your loved one is suffering. Their behaviors don’t seem to make any rational sense; you’re afraid of what’s happening (and what might happen) to them. Worst of all, you might even be blaming yourself.

We know it’s hard. We’ve worked with lots of caring people who’ve sought help for their children, spouse, partner, or other loved ones. We know that by seeking help, you’re demonstrating an incredible act of compassion and kindness. It’s a leap. And it’s so important that you maintain that loving commitment.

Our family program at Discovery Mood & Anxiety recognizes that you are an important part of recovery. Your participation in the recovery process is crucial. By being there, being supportive, contributing to group and family therapy, and being open to addressing issues that come up, you’ll enjoy happier, healthier relationships.

You can get help and relief too.

Mental Health Treatment for Adolescents

One of the biggest challenges parents face is wondering what happens to their child when they’re receiving lifesaving mental health care.

At Discovery Mood & Anxiety, we provide a safe, secure and specialized that ensures your child will continue to make positive strides. We also provide a school support program for students in our residential treatment program who learn while under our care. Our adolescent mental health treatment program was designed from the ground up to meet your child’s emotional and educational needs.

Mental Health Treatment for Adults

Being an adult is not easy. It can be even more exhausting when trying to navigate it all with a diagnosed mental health disorder. Lifesaving treatment can be the difference between a lifetime of pain and understanding how to cope in healthy ways.

For the adult in your life, whether it’s a family member or close friend, Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program will provide them with security, structure and support in one of our personalized treatment facilities or online programs.

Useful Resources for Families

There is a surprising amount of mental health resources for families, despite the stigma these treatable conditions still face. You’re not alone – many families have struggled with the same issues…and came out the other end stronger than ever:

The American Academy of Pediatrics provides a variety of mental health resources on its site.
The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance can direct you to various online mental health support groups.
Mental Health America is an advocacy group that offers helpful articles and resources for parents.
The Anxiety & Depression Association of America has a useful directory of free and anonymous online support groups.
The Kids Mental Health Foundation has helpful links, videos, and articles on its site aimed at helping parents support their children who are struggling.
The Administration for Children and Families, part of the US Department of Health and Human Services, offers resources for children and families.

Signs of Mental Health Issues in Families

It can be surprisingly hard to tell if a family member is struggling with their mental health. The symptoms of mental health disorders can be subtle and hard to recognize, especially if you’re not familiar with them.

However, there are some signs that can let you know your loved one is dealing with a mental health disorder.

Emotional and Behavioral Signs

Although mental health disorders all have individual symptoms of their own, there are many they have in common:

• Withdrawal and Isolation: A major sign is a family member isolating from the rest of the family at mealtimes and other events.

• Personality Changes: Your loved one might suddenly appear to be quiet, suspicious, or frightened.

• Long-Lasting Sadness, Anxiousness, or Hopelessness: These can feel like a literal cloud is hanging over your household. Also, these can be major barriers to communication.

• Anger, Irritability, or Outbursts: A family member can become emotionally volatile if
they’re struggling.

Day-to-Day Functioning Sign

Mental health conditions can make day-to-day functioning difficult, if not impossible:

• Performance Issues: A family member struggling with mental health often experiences a decline in performance at school or work. Sometimes, even daily tasks can be impossible.

• Decision-Making and Concentration Struggles: This is something else that can affect performance at work and school.

• Sleep and Eating Patterns: Mental health disorders can reduce or increase your loved one’s appetite and change their sleeping habits as well.

Family Symptoms

Mental health disorders are family diseases – they affect everyone around the person who’s struggling. This can show up in families in several ways:

• Changing Roles: Roles can get switched around; one person might become a caretaker, while children take on adult responsibilities.

• Routines are Disrupted: Household tasks often get neglected, meals are missed, and the family’s social activities are disrupted.

• Communication Changes: Families struggling with mental health often experience
tension and increased arguments, as well as families walking on eggshells around the person who’s struggling.

• Emotions Run High: Homes with a person who’s struggling often have increased levels of stress, confusion…and even fear. Also, it’s very common for family members to feel overwhelmed and hopeless.

• Signs in Children: Children experiencing a mental health issue often become clingy, worry, show signs of hyperactivity and impulsiveness, and even have nightmares and other sleep issues.
