Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program Sacramento is a day treatment program that provides care for those in need of an intensive outpatient program (IOP). Treatment is customized and employs a variety of evidence-based modalities, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and more. Here, patients benefit from one-on-one therapeutic support as well as group sessions in an encouraging environment of peers where they can safely practice new skills that are transferable to home.

Christy Brown

Christy began working with the Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program in February 2022 as the Program Director. Prior to working at Discovery, Christy was the clinical director for an outpatient mental health clinic in Sacramento and has worked in mental health for over 6 years. In addition to working in mental health, Christy has a background working with older adults living with dementia and their families who care for them. Christy has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from California State University, Sacramento (Sacramento State) and a master’s degree in clinical social work with a concentration in adult mental health and wellness from University of Southern California (USC). Christy enjoys working in this field due to her caring heart and desire to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. It is Christy’s hope that she can continue to learn from her colleagues and patients and assist leading the Discovery Mood & Anxiety Sacramento team in providing quality care to our patients and families. In her free time, Christy enjoys spending quality time with her family, playing with her cats, watching reality television and experimenting with cooking new dishes in the kitchen.

Armando Ornelas

Armando has been working with Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program since August 2018 and is currently facility manager at the Sacramento outpatient program for adults and adolescents. Starting out as a mental health technician, he spent his time working directly with patients and supporting them during their time in treatment. Armando graduated from California State University, Sacramento in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. Currently Armando is pursuing his master’s degree in clinical social work and is set to complete the program in 2022. Armando has a passion for social justice and works to hold himself and others accountable to ensure everyone is provided quality services and treated fairly. In his free time, Armando enjoys being creative through watercolor painting as well as reading manga and watching Netflix.

Alexander Porter

Alexander (Alex) started working with the Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program back in January of 2022. He began working for Discovery due to wanting to work with adolescents and their families after primarily working with the adult and homeless population for the past 4-5 years. Alex runs a few therapeutic groups (such as process and ACT) and provides patients with individual and family therapy sessions throughout the week. He is a recent graduate of Brandman University (in Roseville, CA) and holds a master’s degree in psychology with a dual concentration in marriage and family therapy, and professional clinical counseling. Alex has a calm and caring temperament with a very client-centered and trauma-informed approach to therapy that emphasizes healthy emotional expression and personal self-reflection. He is looking forward to working with as many families as possible at Discovery in hopes of helping patients meet their individual and family goals.

Leslie Lem

Leslie has been working with Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program since 2022 as a primary therapist in the Sacramento area. She previously worked at several other large organizations as a clinical program manager, clinical director and therapist. She often worked with children, teens and their families as well as those struggling with substance use. She also worked in a large local collaborative program focused on reducing or eliminating child abuse and neglect through parent education and family support activities. Leslie was fascinated from a young age with understanding people and their influences and motivations, after raising her family, she returned to graduate school to study counseling psychology and started a therapist career. Working in a variety of settings, she has enjoyed connecting with diverse individuals and groups and supporting people in their journey toward healing and wholeness. Away from work, Leslie enjoys spending time with friends and family, loves live music and theatre, and enjoys the “jewel of Sacramento,” the American River Parkway.
