Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program Sacramento is a day treatment program that provides care for those in need of an intensive outpatient program (IOP). Treatment is customized and employs a variety of evidence-based modalities, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and more. Here, patients benefit from one-on-one therapeutic support as well as group sessions in an encouraging environment of peers where they can safely practice new skills that are transferable to home.

Armando Ornelas

Armando has been working with Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program since August 2018 and is currently facility manager at the Sacramento outpatient program for adults and adolescents. Starting out as a mental health technician, he spent his time working directly with patients and supporting them during their time in treatment. Armando graduated from California State University, Sacramento in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. Currently Armando is pursuing his master’s degree in clinical social work and is set to complete the program in 2022. Armando has a passion for social justice and works to hold himself and others accountable to ensure everyone is provided quality services and treated fairly. In his free time, Armando enjoys being creative through watercolor painting as well as reading manga and watching Netflix.

Robert Thomas

Robert graduated from Pacific Oaks in Pasadena, California, with a bachelor’s degree in psychology-human development. He went on to continue at Pacific Oaks and received his master’s degree in marital and family therapy. He is a member in good standing with the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT). Robert is also a clinical staff consultant to the Mental Wellness Network foundation in Ontario, Canada. In addition, Robert is the founder and owner of “just BE you” Life Strategies ~ Coaching. He has worked in a variety of mental health positions, ranging from program director, lead primary therapist and on-call therapist in multiple settings, within RTC, PHP, IOP, sober living and private practice environments. Robert’s clinical specialties cover dual diagnosis/co-occurring disorders, depression and anxiety, ODD, sexuality, relationship issues, creative self-expression, narcissism, youth and young adult populations, and parent advocacy.

His theoretical perspectives consist of dual components of his personal/experiential journey combined with his behavioral studies in human development, marital and family therapy, family systems and life coaching as an integrative approach completely tailored on an individual basis per patient. Robert combines his passion and motivation to lead and model what Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program strives to promote, which is the well-being of individuals and families in the communities that we serve.

Johnny Tillis

Johnny began working with Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program in July 2022. Johnny has background experience working as program managers, program supervisors, regional director, TBS and wraparound clinician, social worker at an inpatient hospital, as well as background working in the prison system. Johnny has over 10 years of experience working in the field. Johnny has background working with at-risk youth, foster youth, homeless youth and youth experiencing trauma as well working with their families. Johnny has a bachelor’s degree in social and criminal justice from Ashford University and a master’s degree from Ashford University in psychology and master’s in marriage and family therapy. Johnny loves the field and loves helping and serving others. Johnny has a passion for the mental health field to reduce stigma towards seeking mental health support and increase access to effective mental health services in the most at-risk and underserved areas and provide health and hope. In his free time, he loves spending with his family, serving at his local church, cooking and traveling. Johnny is looking forward to working with youth and families here at Discovery.

*Percentage includes adult and adolescent patients who admitted to the Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program in 2021 (between 1/1/21 and 12/31/21) and completed the Recovery Assessment Scale (RAS) (N = 2,278). Average length of stay is 34.2 days for those who completed treatment (did not discharge to a higher level of care, due to insurance, against treatment advice, transfer or administratively).
