Residential Treatment Programs

What is Residential Treatment?

Residential treatment (RTC) is 24-hour care provided by state-licensed treatment centers with licensed healthcare professionals in community-based settings such as campus-based wilderness lodges, halfway houses, residential neighborhoods and boarding schools.

Residential treatment provides greater structure for patients, which allows them to fully focus on their recovery without the external stressors of life back home. Once patients are ready to begin practicing the skills they are learning in a “real world” setting, they will step down to a lower level of care that’s a combination of days in treatment and nights at home.

Residential Treatment at Discovery

Our residential facilities are located throughout the United States and generally do not appear to be any type of treatment center from the outside. In other words, they look like normal housing establishments. They are beautiful, serene spaces specifically designed for healing and comfort. We are renowned for our comfortable furnishings, tranquil colors, and inspirational artwork.

Individuals often share a bedroom with one other resident, and the number of individuals in one house usually ranges from 6 to 8, with larger locations ranging from 14-25 residents depending on the program and location. Residential treatment centers can be designated by gender and age.

What Can I Expect in Residential Treatment?

Patients in residential care will have a weekly schedule of established wake up times, bedtimes, group meetings, chores and mealtimes to maintain a sense of responsibility and to provide a regular daily routine.

Psychotherapy is offered in a wide variety of therapy approaches. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), yoga, nutrition education, positive coping mechanisms, relapse prevention techniques and general life skills are all part of the intensive program. Each is usually offered on a daily or weekly basis, depending on the specific treatment center and treatments are customized based on the unique needs of each patient. On average, an individual will participate in five to six hours of therapy each day. Recovery is hard work, and we ensure that patients have adequate down time to relax and reflect.
