Depression is known to affect millions of individuals in the United States each year and can lead to self-harm and suicide if not properly treated. Treatment for depression consists of a combination of medications and psychotherapy. Although studies have shown that these medications and psychotherapy approaches can be used alone for mild depression, when used in combination, individuals receive the best outcomes in terms of symptoms relief for moderate depression. The most common pharmacological treatments include antidepressant classes such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), atypical antipsychotics, and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). Medication generally takes approximately 6-8 weeks for results to take effect. Psychotherapy includes cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, problem-solving therapy and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.

Treating co-occurring disorders at Center For Discovery

Depression is a common mood disorder however it often occurs in the presence of co-occurring disorders. Co-occurring disorders are mental health and/or substance abuse disorders that occur in the presence of another mental health disorder. Depression is often coupled with a substance abuse disorder or an eating disorder. Depression can be the result of these other co-occurring disorders or can be the reason why these other disorders occurred. Regardless, it is important to treat each and every disorder that is present, in order for the client to make a full recovery. Discovery Mood & Anxiety works diligently to recognize, diagnosis and treat co-occurring disorders.

How Center For Discovery helped my child with depression

“My teen who suffers from depression and anxiety had been in therapy for over a year and a half, and on prescriptions drugs for depression. My daughter was admitted here as a recommendation from her psychiatrist after a suicidal attempt and 72-hour hold at another facility. She was reluctant to stay here at first, but after a week she settled in and my spouse and I noticed positive changes. There are many therapeutic exercises on and off campus including equine therapy and fitness, social/ group activities, DBT and leadership development. Family therapy is also offered weekly while your child is a resident. We were fortunate enough to have our insurance approve us for the day program after the residential treatment days ran out over the course of one month. Throughout my teen’s stay, we saw a teen who was initially unmotivated and had given up on life to a young adult with goals and the willingness to achieve and work towards something greater. We are so grateful to the entire caring staff, resident counselors and especially my teen’s assigned therapist Bob Sperring who is truly an angel in disguise and has helped transform my teen and given us all we something we did not have before- hope.” -Tiffany A.
